According to studies, CBD oil for pain and other purposes is extracted as a powder which comes from the flowers of the cannabis plant. This powder is then mixed with an oil, for instance olive which enhance application and effectiveness. Hence the name “CBD oil". Some studies have also suggested that the cannabidiol compound found in cannabis may be beneficial for skin conditions like acne. To support this , other numerous studies have shown that CBD oil has anti-inflammatory benefits when applied to skin. Some people apply CBD oil topically to the breakouts themselves while some take it orally for long- term prevention.

A study in 2014 found that CBD oil for pain prevented human sebocytes i.e, the cell that create sebum from reproducing too much oil. The study also found that CBD oil triggers anti-inflammatory reactions in cells and prevents cytokines, known acne-triggers, from activating. Experts recommend mixing CBD oil with carrier oil such as coconut or olive oil to apply to the skin. It may also be possible to take CBD oil orally and experience the same benefits as applying topically. However topicals are the preferred choice.
